Initial thoughts on Akko Jelly Blue switches
These are a light, gently tactile switch. So far, they feel more tactile than Brown switches and feature an immediate tactile bump rather than one that starts further into a key press. These are my first mid-tactility switch. I’ve used heavily tactile switches, like NovelKeys Blueberries and TKC Kiwis. And I’ve also used lightly tactile switches like Gateron Browns and Cherry MX Clears. These are distinctly tactile over the tactility of either the Brown or Clear switches.
Having that more moderate tactility is less fatiguing than the heavy tactile switches that had gained so much popularity in 2020. What made me intrigued with these to try them was that moderate tactility but also that they use a two-stage spring. I’m going to have to continue typing with them but what I’ve found is that there is a feeling of slightly increased force after the initial tactile event that feels heavier and provides an increased resistance.
So far, the sound is higher pitch than the Jelly Black switches that I had swapped to prior to these arriving. For a non-lubricated switch, they are pleasantly smooth, with low levels of scratchiness. The tactile bump is noticeable but doesn’t have the feel of heaviness like Kiwis nor the duration of Blueberries. It’s rounded and smooth, but quick, with the end of the tactility matching well with the switch actuation. After that mid-point drop in resistance is an immediate return to stronger resistance making for a largely linear finish to bottoming out. It works well to incentivize not bottoming out while typing as well which should also help prevent typing fatigue.
So far, I am mostly getting back into typing on tactile switches again and retraining my brain to pay attention to the tactility. Initially I thought they were very low tactility because I had gotten so used to linear switches that feature a heavier bottoming out than these switches feature. For instance, the Jelly Blacks bottom out at 60g while these Jelly Blue bottom out with 55g of force. Add in switches like NovelKeys Silks that bottom at 63.5g and a 55g bottom out force is noticeably lighter. What is interesting is that the tactile force is 60g on these with the force at actuation being 40g meaning that they do have that distinct tactility there.
Right now, I’m just going to have to type more with them and I’m enjoying that. So, so far, I’m pretty pleased with these and look forward to going much more in depth with them when I get more collected thoughts after using them for more than just a page of text.
